Colorado Companies to Watch: Vectis Automation

Vectis Automation provides cobot welding and cutting systems to manufacturers throughout North America. Cobots, short for collaborative robots, work alongside humans and boost productivity by three to four times in all types and sizes of fabrication shops.

“There is a shortage of skilled welders in North America, so there is much production pain at manufacturers,” said Doug Rhoda, chairman of the company.
Rhoda considered acquiring an existing welding company or fabricator that he could add cobot welding to. But he decided to bootstrap the company so he could get the best people he’d worked with in the past on board.

The company has innovated in the technology space as well as its business approach, including offering 30-day money-back guarantees and rent-to-own programs, to reduce the barriers for people trying its cobots.

Most Vectis systems cost between $90,000 and $130,000, including shipping, a two-year warranty and lifetime software license. Most of the company’s customers report a payback of two years or less.

Cobots also have proven to be an effective talent attraction and retention tool because they allow fabricators to offload boring tasks and focus on more interesting work.

“We are entering new segments that have not traditionally automated their welding because it was too difficult or expensive,” Rhoda said. “We are addressing this with affordable, versatile, easy-to-use solutions.”
