Made in Colorado – Kreitler Rollers

Kansas City-based Al Kreitler devised his namesake bicycle training device in the 1970s using the materials he had on hand. “He was really into biking, he worked for the newspaper, and he made his first set of rollers out of the cores from newsprint rolls,” says Tim Fry, whose Mountain Racing Products (MRP) acquired the brand in 2000.

Made in-house in Grand Junction since 2001, the rollers helped smooth MRP’s seasonal sales and manufacturing output: The company’s bicycle components are popular in summer, whereas rollers are in demand in the offseason.

Nicknamed the “Rolls-Royce of rollers,” the durable, all-aluminum product helps cyclists improve their form by highlighting faults in their pedaling style, explains Fry. “A bicycle training roller basically amplifies any inefficiency that you have and forces you to work on that.”

Starting at $540 retail.
