It can be hard to overlook the countless defunct commercial retail buildings around Colorado that sit vacantly or rotate seasonal businesses like Spirit Halloween or host short-term discount appliance sales. Between the rise of home delivery and countless disruptions caused by COVID-19, it’s safe to say these suburban and urban stores aren’t exactly in high demand. And there are hundreds of them scattered across the state with few solutions on the horizon.

Enter Jimmy Bemis and Matt Barnett, two entrepreneurs with deep roots in Colorado, food entertainment, and sports who recently co-founded The Basketball Social House, a one-of-a-kind facility dedicated to bringing families and friends together to enjoy the game of basketball through unique and innovative experiences. Bemis has spent a number of years turning around a portfolio of underperforming businesses owned by a private equity firm in the restaurant, hospitality, and entertainment industries, and Barnett is known locally for his stellar basketball career at Colorado State University where his records in the late 1990s still rank in the Top 10 for rebounds and assists.

Bemis and Barnett, along with their families and private equity backing, have chosen Centennial, Colorado to open one of the most unique and stunning public basketball venues in the country offering a mix of food, fun, and basketball.

The vibe carries an industrial feel with pops of farmhouse supported by a technology-enabled basketball experience. Proprietary software and Dr. Dish Shooting Machines help modernize the game for a fun and unique experience for all ages. The dining selection is particularly impressive too. With a wide selection of gourmet dishes created by Head Chef Dan Grimes, they include spicy sausage and artichoke dip, banana toast, Korean steam buns, chicken and waffles, and many other fresh, bold options – you won’t find any average concession-style food here. Private Suites feature sectional couches, a sound system, TVs, full food and drink service, and technology and software to facilitate a fun outing for family, friends, or couples’ nights.

The Basketball Social House may not be the solution to all of Colorado’s empty big box store problems. Still, it will be for one located at 7450 S. University Blvd., Suite 200, Centennial, CO 80122.

Families, hoopers, and future Hall-of-Famers will be able to enjoy The Basketball Social House in October of 2022.

Topgolf, A Model Worth Replicating

So how did Bemis and Barnett come up with the idea? The two were inspired by venues like Topgolf rising in popularity, especially among non-golfers, and made it their mission over the past two years to bring their fresh new vision for the game of basketball to the community. Any investor who has watched Topgolf take off knows that Bemis and Barnett mean business.

According to the Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA), a minimum of 450 million people play the sport of basketball around the world. The National Sporting Goods Association estimates more than 26 million Americans play basketball regularly, more than any other team sport. These are the people who are actively participating in basketball, and Bemis and Barnett believe there is a massive and ignored market segment of individuals that either has no outlet or the right outlet for basketball.

What if you could have invested in Topgolf from the start, only with a larger customer base, at 1/20th of the facility cost, and an optimal business solution of built-in revenue streams for slow business hours? There are few that would pass on that opportunity.

What makes The Social Basketball House UniqueBtn2

“This is not just a basketball facility – this is a high-end fun and social experience,” says Bemis. And if you don’t play basketball? Not to worry. “We have games and activities for truly everyone – all levels, all ages. And if you just want to relax and enjoy hand-crafted food and drink in a fun, casual atmosphere, we’ve got you covered, too.”

The showpiece bar sits at the heart of the 2,200 sq. ft. lounge area and serves a curated selection of wine, beer, and specialty cocktails in addition to a full coffee and espresso selection, locally sourced ice cream, and craft energy drinks. Basketball suites provide elevated experiences for participants and spectators regardless of age or skill level. Youth, high school, and adult hoopers will be pleased with the design and services, and basketball parents will be thrilled with the accommodations and amenities.

“We have traditional basketball with some surprises, training, competitions, a new innovative way to host 3v3 games, as well as a handful of other truly innovative basketball concepts for adults,” says Barnett. “Whether you’re training, playing in a league or tournament, or just there to grab dinner and drinks with the family while watching the game there is something for everyone. We spent considerable time ensuring people who are not basketball fans will still have a unique and enjoyable experience.”

Plus, while Colorado loves to peddle a myth of 300 days of sunshine, the reality is that cold weather puts us indoors more than we often realize. Added all up, The Basketball Social House is looking like a slam dunk for athletes, families, and investors.

  • Three luxury basketball suites featuring a state-of-the-art basketball & digital experience.
  • Drop-Ins/Memberships/Private Training and ability to pay for hourly suite usage.
  • Custom 3v3 Court, a new spin to a traditional avenue including a specially designed arena.
  • Youth basketball shooting academy program.
  • Summer & holiday youth training camps and clinics.
  • Relaxing lounge perfect for working while you enjoy a latte or an elevated food offering.
  • Community area with foosball, B-Ball Games designed basketball shooting game perfect before or after you reserve a basketball suite.
  • Stunning indoor lounge with a feature wall facilitating multiple local and regional craft beer taps.
  • A sports-bar style set up with TVs strategically throughout the facility to watch live college and professional sports

“We have spent the past two years maturing this innovatively disruptive concept to fully understand the opportunity, test various revenue streams, develop processes to scale the idea, create a strategic plan, and develop the right execution plan for the success of the business and our investors. The financial potential and the uniquely different approach taken by The Basketball Social House and B-Ball Games to connect the previously unconnected is a large factor in what makes this business appealing,” adds Bemis.

Bemis and Barnett have identified more than 20 potential revenue streams they believe will work synergistically together, naturally filling the capacity of the facility during non-competing business hours. Each revenue stream has been developed as a program critically looking at the optimal support structure to maximize profitability.

The facility also offers multiple spaces specifically designed for private events including reserving the entire venue. There is even a technology-equipped 13-chair conference room attached to a Private Suite for those looking to bring some friendly competition to their next business meeting.

Corporate events, birthday parties, B-Ball Games competitions, high school events, college showcases, professional events, pro athlete rental, and merchandise will all be a part of the plan.
