An estimated 10 percent of Colorado households still don’t have adequate access to the internet, but the Colorado Broadband Office, a division of the Governor’s Office of Information & Technology, hopes to get that number closer to zero — or around 1 percent — by 2027, thanks to an award of $826.5 million from the National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA).

Colorado’s share of funding, announced in June along with that of other states, is part of a $42.5 billion broadband infrastructure bill that Congress passed in 2021. In August, the state released a “Five-Year Action Plan” intended to assist the Colorado Broadband Office in its crafting of an Initial Proposal to “ensure that every resident has access to a reliable, affordable, and high-speed broadband connection.” This Initial Proposal is due to the NTIA within 180 days of the announced allocation amount, or Dec. 28.
