Muller Engineering Co. of Lakewood received a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies for work on the I-70 in .

The project focused on improving safety along a corridor known for runaway truck incidents. The redesigned ramp includes a more visible and accessible entry and a crash wall designed to withstand a 260,000-pound impact, preventing trucks from entering the canyon.

Additional features include pull-off bays, tow anchors, message boards, flashing beacons and closed-circuit television monitoring. The design also incorporates underground firewater containment vaults to protect Mount Vernon Creek in the event of a vehicle fire.

More than 3,000 truck drivers provided feedback used in the design.

Judging for the awards program was conducted in February by a 32-member panel that included industry, government, media and academic representatives.

All 240 award winners—including 16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards, and the announcement of the Grand Conceptor Award for the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement—will take place at the 2026 EEA Gala on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC.
