DENVER — Albertsons has reached an agreement in principle to pay more than $773.7 million to resolve claims tied to its role in the opioid crisis, with Colorado expected to receive at least $32 million, Attorney General Phil Weiser announced Tuesday.
The proposed settlement is part of multistate negotiations led by attorneys general in Colorado, California, Illinois and Oregon. Discussions are ongoing regarding injunctive terms tied to the agreement.
Albertsons operates grocery stores in Colorado under its Albertsons and Safeway brands.
“Today’s agreement in principle holds Albertsons accountable for their role in the opioid crisis in Colorado and across the nation,” Weiser said.
If finalized, the funds would be distributed to state and local governments under Colorado’s opioid settlement framework established in 2021, which directs money toward treatment, recovery, prevention and education efforts.
Colorado has secured more than $912 million from national opioid settlements to date, according to the attorney general’s office.
