Colorado Springs ranked No. 12 nationally for independent coworking presence in a new report from CoworkingCafe, with nearly half of the city’s coworking operators classified as locally owned businesses.
The report found that 47% of Colorado Springs coworking operators, or nine of 19 total providers, are independent businesses operating fewer than four locations within a single city. The city ranked ahead of Denver, where independent operators account for about 32% of the coworking market.
CoworkingCafe analyzed 73 U.S. cities with populations of 200,000 or more to determine where independent coworking businesses have the strongest presence.
Colorado Springs also ranked high for remote work participation. About 17.6% of the city’s workforce works remotely, above the national average of 13.3%. The city’s self-employment rate measured 5.5%, slightly below the national average of 5.9%.
The report noted that Colorado Springs benefits from lower living costs compared with Denver while maintaining similar coworking membership rates. Average coworking memberships in both cities cost about $235 per month.
“Colorado Springs significantly outpaces Denver for indie coworking presence,” the report stated, noting that Denver’s market is dominated by national chains despite having more total independent operators.
The report also found that smaller cities continue to show stronger independent coworking growth. Nine of the top 15 cities ranked had populations below 500,000, including Colorado Springs, with roughly 487,887 residents.
Nationally, St. Paul, Minnesota, ranked first for independent coworking presence with 80%, followed by Wichita, Kansas, and Baltimore, Maryland.
