What began as a Colorado company focused on backyard studios has grown into a national player in one of the fastest-evolving segments of the housing market. Now, Louisville-based Studio Home is taking its next step: launching a franchise model to scale its approach to accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and small-format housing nationwide.
Founded in 2008 as Studio Shed, the company saw significant growth during the pandemic as demand surged for one-room backyard offices and flexible living spaces. As that demand evolved, driven in part by legislation from Gov. Jared Polis and other states making ADUs easier to permit, Studio Home expanded into full-time housing solutions, including backyard homes and multi-use residential units.
Today, the company has delivered more than 6,500 structures across North America and works closely with municipalities, developers and homeowners to navigate zoning, permitting and construction challenges tied to infill housing.
The new franchise model is designed to extend that locally driven approach, pairing Studio Home’s Colorado-based building system with regional operators who understand market-specific requirements.
“Project success is inherently local. When strong local ownership controls the project end to end, everything improves – timelines move faster, margins strengthen, and the customer experience is better,” said Mike Koenig, co-founder of Studio Home.
