FAA modifies airspace to enhance safety at Cortez Municipal Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a final rule modifying and establishing Class E airspace at Cortez Municipal Airport in Cortez, Colorado. These changes are designed to improve the safety and management of instrument flight rules (IFR) operations at the airport.
The modifications include widening the radius of the Class E airspace designated as a surface area by half a mile to better contain arriving IFR aircraft during certain maneuvers.
The Class E airspace is also extended 0.8 miles to the northeast and 2.4 miles to the southwest to better manage IFR departure operations.
An additional extension of approximately 8 x 8 miles is established to the northeast to contain arriving IFR aircraft more effectively without requiring two-way radio communication.
The central radius of the Class E airspace extending upward from 700 feet above the surface is reduced from 7 miles to 6.1 miles, with adjustments made to better contain IFR operations.
These changes are part of routine amendments to keep airspace regulations operationally current and are not expected to have a significant economic impact on the local community. Additionally, the FAA has determined that these modifications do not pose significant environmental impacts.
