DENVER — The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America will host its annual Celebration of Hope fundraiser, “Wine and Shine,” on June 5 at Bigsby Folly in Denver.
The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Bigsby Folly, 3563 Wazee St. Proceeds will support the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s programs, advocacy efforts, educational resources and research initiatives for individuals and families affected by Huntington’s disease.
Organizers said the event will bring together community members and supporters to raise funds and awareness for the disease.
“HDSA is dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by HD,” the organization said in a statement.
Huntington’s disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. The disease affects both physical and cognitive abilities and currently has no cure. Each child of a parent with Huntington’s disease has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene that causes the condition.
According to HDSA, about 41,000 Americans are living with symptoms of Huntington’s disease, while more than 200,000 people are at risk of inheriting the disorder.
The Huntington’s Disease Society of America was founded in 1967 by Marjorie Guthrie, wife of folk singer Woody Guthrie, who died from complications of Huntington’s disease at age 55.
Registration and donation information are available through the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. Event inquiries may be directed to volunteer coordinator Liza Heap.
