Avenger Open Space in Woodland Park wins Colorado Lottery People’s Choice Award

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. — Avenger Open Space in Woodland Park has won the 2026 Colorado Lottery People’s Choice Starburst Award.
The 120-acre open space received 1,929 votes during the monthlong competition. Coloradans cast 15,330 votes among 18 projects, about 2,500 more than last year.
The city of Woodland Park used a $523,250 Great Outdoors Colorado grant funded by Colorado Lottery proceeds to purchase and preserve the property. The city partnered with Palmer Land Conservancy, the Teller Trail Team and community donors and volunteers.
Palmer Land Conservancy holds a conservation easement on the property. Avenger Open Space protects wildlife habitat, provides public recreation and connects with neighboring Paradise Open Space.
“Avenger Open Space is a great example of what Lottery proceeds make possible, protecting important natural areas while creating more opportunities for people to get outside and enjoy them,” Colorado Lottery Senior Director Tom Seaver said.
The Colorado Lottery’s Starburst Awards recognize community and conservation projects funded with lottery proceeds. Since 1983, the lottery has directed more than $4.6 billion to outdoor projects through Great Outdoors Colorado, the Conservation Trust Fund and Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
