LONGMONT, Colo. — Aerospace and defense company Ursa Major opened a manufacturing facility in Longmont on Aug. 20 to expand production of avionics and in-space propulsion systems.
The facility can accommodate more than 125 employees and includes welding and manufacturing laboratories, clean rooms and an environmental testing lab.
“We’re opening this Longmont facility because the demand is here now,” CEO Chris Spagnoletti said. “Moving that work here also opens the floor in Berthoud for liquid engines, vehicle integration and solid rocket motors.”
Moving avionics, in-space propulsion production and support operations to Longmont will create additional manufacturing capacity at Ursa Major’s Berthoud headquarters. The company plans to use that space for liquid engine production, vehicle integration and assembly of its Hadley and Draper engines and HAVOC Missile System.
The expansion also will provide more capacity for the company’s hypersonics and solid rocket motor programs. Ursa Major manufactures solid rocket motors in Berthoud and Galeton.
The company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 20 with employees, customers, government officials and industry representatives. The opening follows a manufacturing expansion completed in March that increased machining, testing and additive manufacturing capacity.
Berthoud-based Ursa Major operates six sites in Colorado, Ohio and Washington, D.C. Its Colorado facilities are in Berthoud, Longmont and Galeton.
