In Brief:

Mission Foods has closed its Pueblo tortilla plant and laid off about 100 union workers, according to United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7.

Company executives informed employees Friday that the plant would cease operations immediately, the union said. Some employees had worked at the facility for more than 40 years.

“Mission Foods should have done better by its workers,” Local 7 President said. “Local 7 will do everything in our power, including working closely with our government and community allies and the Southern Colorado Labor Council, to provide workers with the resources necessary to work through this transition.”

The plant opened as Candy’s Tortilla Factory in the late 1950s under founder Candelario “Candy” Estrada. Mission Foods acquired it in 1994. Employees at the plant have been represented by Local 7 for nearly four decades.

Mission Foods is a subsidiary of Mexico-based , a corn flour and tortilla producer.
