Colorado has formed a public-private council to evaluate the state’s business climate and recommend changes to economic policies and regulations.
The Governor’s Competitiveness Council will compare Colorado with competing states, identify its economic advantages and examine challenges involving workforce development, education, investment and access to capital. It also will gather feedback from businesses and economic development organizations across the state.
“Colorado isn’t as competitive as it used to be, and everyone building or backing companies here can feel it,” said Seth Levine, partner and co-founder at Foundry. “This council’s job is to face that squarely, benchmark where we actually stand against the states we compete with and make actionable recommendations.”
The council plans to release a strategic roadmap this fall. Its findings will be provided to gubernatorial candidates and the Colorado General Assembly to help guide future economic policies.
An executive committee is overseeing the council’s formation. Its members include representatives from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, Colorado Community College System, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, Colorado Chamber of Commerce, Colorado Business Roundtable, Colorado Technology Association and Colorado Building and Construction Trades Council.
Other members represent investment firms, businesses, economic development groups and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. The committee remains in formation and plans to involve business leaders, elected officials and economic development representatives from across Colorado.
