Lathrop GPM to combine with HG Law

Lathrop GPM, which has an office in , will combine with firm HG Law effective Jan. 1, 2027.

The combined firm will operate as Lathrop GPM and have about 370 attorneys and $300 million in revenue. The deal will add 27 attorneys and 23 patent agents and technical advisers from HG Law, increasing Lathrop GPM’s attorney count by about 7.5%.

HG Law has offices in San Jose, New York and London. The combination will give Lathrop GPM its first offices in New York and London while expanding its presence in .

“The addition of HG Law is transformative for the engineering side of our IP practice,” Lathrop GPM managing partner Cameron Garrison said. “HG Law deepens our IP bench in critical areas of expertise that are important to our clients, particularly in the and spaces.”

The combined intellectual property practice will handle patent and trademark prosecution, copyright, trade secrets, litigation, licensing, technology transactions and privacy matters. HG Law’s attorneys and technical professionals have experience in computer, software, electrical and mechanical engineering, including work involving financial technology, telecommunications, medical devices, semiconductors and consumer products.

Lathrop GPM also named Boston partner James Velema leader of its intellectual property practice group. He will work with Kate Tompkins, who will remain director of practice management.

Velema, a founding partner of the firm’s Boston office, has more than 20 years of experience in life sciences and intellectual property law. Before earning his law degree, he worked as a research scientist, intellectual property manager and patent agent in the biotechnology industry.

Tompkins has led the intellectual property practice group since 2021 and has served as director of practice management since 2019.
