Maha Kamal, 39, worked in international criminal law for the United Nations during her last year of law school before shifting gears and embarking on a career in family law. Nearly a decade after founding the Colorado Family Law Project in Denver, Kamal is pivoting again to focus on mediation, unbundled services, and education.

Case in point: Kamal is co-chair of the Paraprofessionals and Legal Services (PALS) subcommittee at the Colorado Supreme Court to establish a licensed legal paraprofessional (LP) program, which is among the first in the country.

It’s ultimately about access to justice. “As of today, about 75 to 80 percent of Coloradans are going through the family law system unrepresented,” said Kamal. “They can’t afford attorneys, and so the LP program was launched to help alleviate some of those costs and concerns.”

She’s also the author of Colorado Family Law: A Trail Guide (2024), which was translated into Spanish this year, and is working on a collection of short stories.
