A partner at Denver’s Hogan Omidi, Kathy Hogan practices family law exclusively and handles complex financial and custody issues along with prenuptial and marital agreements.

Hogan wrote the book on family law in Colorado, entitled Colorado Family Law Practice, now in its second edition. She’s also the former president of the Colorado Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and editor in chief of The Family Advocate, a quarterly magazine published by the American Bar Association.

Practicing family law requires a certain breadth of knowledge, said Hogan. “If your client owns oil and gas rights, you’ve got to know what those are or what that means. If your client is a real estate developer, you need to learn how that business works,” she explained. “It is not static at all, because each family where there is a divorce or a parenting time or child custody issue brings different kinds of assets and different kinds of issues to the table.”

Hogan’s guiding principle: “Your client is not your friend, and the opposing lawyer is not your enemy.”
