As business unit lead for JE Dunn’s Rocky Mountain Division, Betts, 42, oversees projects from Southern Wyoming to Pueblo from the Kansas City-headquartered firm’s Denver office. He moved into management after working as a project manager from 2007 to 2020.

Highlighting ongoing projects at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Betts said clout is “relationship-based” in the construction industry. “Even though it is a large industry, it’s a small group of people that are in the AEC [architecture, engineering, and construction] group, and treating everyone with with respect and giving everyone the the opportunity to talk and work together has been important, because we often see the same people over and over.”

There’s a certain allure to working in the material world, he added. “That tangible aspect of being able to see what we’ve actually worked on and see what we’ve actually built is really inspirational for me and a lot of others in the industry.”

An avid angler and hunter, Betts serves on the board of Colorado Youth Outdoors.
