CARBONDALE, Colo. — The will open a new exhibition, : a whole can be only a part, on Dec. 2. The show will run through Oct. 31, 2026.

In Brief:
  • Powers Art Center opens new Jasper Johns exhibition Dec. 2
  • Show features prints, paintings and drawings arranged alphabetically
  • Curated by Jasper Johns Curatorial Fellow
  • Opening reception set for Dec. 4 with free admission

The exhibition is arranged alphabetically to highlight Johns’ approach to structure, repetition, and meaning. Johns, known for recurring motifs such as flags, targets, numbers, and maps, often used the alphabet as a framework. The display features three prints, six paintings, and three drawings that demonstrate the artist’s interest in signs, seriality, language, and chance. The exhibition invites visitors to consider how new interpretations emerge when Johns’ work is presented through the logic that shaped his practice.

The show is organized by Jessica Eisenthal in collaboration with the Powers Art Center. Eisenthal is the first Jasper Johns Curatorial Fellow working with the center to curate an exhibition and provide critical analysis of the artist’s work.

An opening reception will take place Dec. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitors may register online or call the museum at 970-963-4445. Eisenthal will return in February for a public program about the exhibition.

All works on view come from the former collection of John and Kimiko Powers and are now held by the Ryobi Foundation. The museum is also presenting In the Living Room with John and Kimiko in the main level gallery. That exhibition explores a period in which influential friendships helped shape the Powers’ collection and will remain open through May 2, 2026. Admission to the museum is free.
