Future Creatives: A Student Art Show will open March 13 at the Powers Art Center in Carbondale and run through April 9.
The exhibition features artwork by 35 students from Marble Charter School in grades K-8. The show is part of an annual program in which the museum partners with local schools to display student work.
Students visited the center during the 2025-2026 school year to study modern art and tour the exhibitions, In the Living Room with John and Kimiko and Jasper Johns: a whole can be only a part. The exhibitions served as inspiration for the students’ own artwork.
“Watching students light up when they see a piece they’re drawn to, or when they get the chance to sit down and create something, it’s irreplaceable,” said Megan Rusby, community engagement manager at the Powers Art Center.
Students used sketchbooks to study the artwork and develop their own projects. Younger students explored color and shape inspired by artists, including Andy Warhol and Frank Stella. Older students created original works influenced by artists featured in the exhibitions.
“I feel excited about my artwork being in the museum, and I can’t wait to see it all hung up,” said Amira P., a fourth-grade student.
The student artwork will be displayed alongside pieces that inspired the projects.
The Powers Art Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. The exhibition In the Living Room with John and Kimiko runs through May 2, 2026. Jasper Johns: A Whole Can Be Only a Part will remain on display through Oct. 31, 2026.
