Joel Sayres, 50, focuses on complex intellectual property (IP) disputes, including patent infringement involving a variety of technologies in state and federal courts, as well as representing clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board. The new office leader for Faegre Drinker’s Denver office, Sayres has also co-taught a semester-long course on patent litigation at the University of Colorado law school.
Sayres’ ethos as an IP litigator revolves around “viewing problems through the lens of the client, and taking account of not only the legal issue, but the larger business issues,” he said. “You learn something new every day. You could have a patent about inflatable mattresses one day and then a patent about fiber-optic networking systems the next day.”
He highlighted a recent case outside of IP where the firm helped a number of Afghan families receive asylum status in the U.S. “It was really gratifying that we were able to get them to be able to stay here when they did so much for U.S. forces while that conflict was going on.”
