An architect by trade, Lisa Morey worked in New Zealand, Florida, and Canada before starting Colorado Earth in 2017. She’s long been fascinated with the potential of adobe in modern construction, and offers design and build services as well as materials with Colorado Earth.

Adobe “has been used for 10,000 years, and still today 40 percent of the world’s population uses this material, often because that’s all they have to build with,” she says. “And yet it’s still considered very niche here in the U.S.”

It’s also very green compared to concrete. Using waste from a quarry and water, EcoBlox are pressed into bricks and cured for about three weeks. The finished products store energy from the sun during the day and gradually release it at night.

Colorado Earth more than doubled production at a new facility in Brighton in 2022. “I have probably seven active projects right now, with 10 or so in the design process,” says Morey.
