Morgan Kurz has snowboarded and biked all over the West. She learned how to sew for a job in California in 2016, then tore her ACL snowboarding two years later and went back to sewing during her recovery. It started as “an outlet to stay mentally busy while I was healing my physical body,” she said, then snowballed into a side hustle as in 2020.

Using sustainably sourced Merino wool, hemp-organic cotton blends, leftover technical fabric scraps and plant-based dyes, Kurz makes colorful and distinctive neck gaiters, jerseys, hoodies and other wearables in her “one-woman shop” in Steamboat Springs.

“I cut the fabric,” she said. “I make all my patterns from scratch. I product-test, prototype, make changes as necessary and then cut fabric, sew the fabric and I dye a lot of the fabric by hand.”

$35 to $250 retail.
