DENVER — Smashburger has promoted Jim Sullivan to chief executive officer as the fast-casual burger chain looks to boost growth through brand focus, franchise expansion and bold menu innovation.
Sullivan has served as president since February and will now oversee all aspects of strategy and operations for the company, which is known for its smashed burger technique. His appointment follows several initiatives launched under his leadership, including the “Summer of Smash” campaign, a new everyday value menu tier and the introduction of new items such as the Bacon Brisket Smash.
The company also recently opened a new location at Detroit Metro Airport, marking a return to unit growth. These efforts have helped improve guest satisfaction, operational performance and overall momentum.
“Jim brings decisive leadership, a clear vision and a deep understanding of Smashburger’s position in the market,” said Richard CW Shin, CEO of Jollibee Group International and global chief finance and risk officer of Jollibee Group. “He has already laid the foundation for a more focused brand that is delivering better food, a stronger guest experience and renewed momentum across the system.”
As CEO, Sullivan will focus on repositioning the brand around culinary quality, operational excellence and franchise scalability. He aims to accelerate franchise development, particularly in non-traditional venues such as airports and colleges, while also reinvesting in the dine-in experience.
“Smashburger modernized the technique of smashing burgers and we’re reclaiming that leadership with intention and momentum,” Sullivan said. “Our bold flavor, elevated guest experience and operational discipline give us a distinct edge in a crowded space.”
Sullivan has more than 25 years of executive and restaurant development experience. Before joining Smashburger, he served as chief development officer at QDOBA, where he led global expansion. He has also held senior roles at CKE Restaurant Holdings, Friendly’s Ice Cream, Modern Restaurant Concepts and American Hospitality Concepts.
