Alterra Mountain Company said Chief Executive Officer plans to step down at the end of the ski season.

The Denver-based company announced the leadership change March 10. Smith will remain available to assist during the transition over the next year.

“Serving as CEO of Alterra has been an honor, and I am deeply proud of the people, capabilities and businesses we’ve added to this company,” Smith said.

During the transition, an executive committee of the board will operate as an Office of the CEO and oversee day-to-day operations until a new chief executive is appointed. The committee will include representatives from owners and Henry Crown & Company, along with former Alterra CEO Rusty Gregory.

Eric Resnick, chairman of Alterra’s board and CEO of KSL Capital Partners, said the company plans to launch a search for Smith’s successor.

“Jared has been a valued leader at Alterra Mountain Company for many years, and we are grateful for his leadership and partnership,” Resnick said.

Alterra operates mountain destinations and the Ikon Pass program, which provides access to more than 70 ski destinations worldwide.

The company said it has invested more than $2 billion across its resorts during the past eight years. It recently announced a more than $400 million investment in in Utah for resort expansion, infrastructure improvements and employee housing and benefits.
