This article appears in the Winter 2025 issue of ColoradoBiz under the headline, Colorado prepares for dual milestones as 150th statehood anniversary nears.

In Brief:
  • Colorado prepares for dual 150th and 250th anniversary milestones in 2026
  • New digital passport programs spotlight mountain towns, arts and winter events
  • Tourism businesses invited to join statewide check-in program at no cost
  • Residents and organizations encouraged to submit events for the 2026 calendar

Colorado is preparing for a historic year as it readies to celebrate its 150th anniversary of statehood in 2026, while the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Colorado is the only state observing both milestones at once, a combination state and federal officials have dubbed the “.”

State lawmakers created the – Colorado 150 Commission to coordinate the statewide commemoration. The commission is charged with encouraging participation from residents across Colorado and supporting businesses in communities large and small and in every corner of the state.

The commission has outlined 12 signature initiatives intended to highlight state history and inspire public engagement. Plans include historic preservation projects, a statewide storytelling effort, an educational film series, an online statehood exhibit, and a national history exhibit at History Colorado, which will later be adapted into a print-on-demand format. Other projects include drone shows, a statewide 14er climb and a designed to guide residents and visitors through Colorado’s cultural and outdoor offerings.

Digital passport program expands

The digital passport program is one of the commission’s most public-facing initiatives. Accessible through a mobile interface without requiring an app download, the system allows users to find attractions, check in at participating locations and earn rewards while exploring cultural, creative and seasonal experiences across the state.

Developed by the Office, a division of the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, the program is available on Colorado.com, the MyColorado app and Am250CO150.org. United Airlines is the program’s presenting sponsor.
Officials say each passport is intended to spotlight Colorado’s heritage, creativity and adventurous character while motivating residents and visitors to explore new destinations during the anniversary year.

Three new themed passports were recently launched and are now live.

Mountain Town Passport

The Mountain Town Passport highlights the character of Colorado’s high-country communities. It features gondola rides, boutique retailers, local galleries and scenic walking districts in well-known mountain destinations. Participants earn an entry into a grand prize drawing with each check-in. Winners will be announced on or before Dec. 31, 2025.

Opportunities for businesses

State officials are inviting tourism-related businesses to participate at no cost by joining the program as check-in locations. Eligible businesses must be open to visitors and able to provide dependable Wi-Fi or cellular service. Participating locations receive free visibility through statewide marketing campaigns, increased foot traffic and opportunities to promote local products and experiences.
Additional passports are planned for release throughout the anniversary period. Upcoming themes include live music, eating and drinking local, wildlife and water adventures. A full list is available at Colorado.com/passport.

Organizers say the dual anniversary offers a rare moment for residents to reflect on Colorado’s history while rediscovering the state’s landscapes, communities and cultural institutions.

Statewide calendar of events

Colorado officials are encouraging residents, community groups and businesses to help shape the state’s once-in-a-generation dual anniversary celebration in 2026. As Colorado prepares to mark the 150th anniversary of statehood alongside the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence, the America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission is inviting Coloradans to submit events for inclusion in a statewide calendar highlighting commemorations, cultural programs and community gatherings.

The calendar is intended to showcase activities that reflect Colorado’s history, diversity and local traditions. Organizers say public participation is central to the effort, noting that communities of all sizes can propose events ranging from historical presentations to arts festivals and seasonal celebrations.

Businesses may also submit events and are encouraged to take part by hosting programs that support the state’s tourism and cultural sectors.

Event submissions and participation details are available at Am250CO150.org.
