DENVER — The Colorado Department of Revenue is extending state tax deadlines and waiving certain late filing penalties for businesses affected by wildfires covered under Gov. Jared Polis‘ 2026 emergency declarations.
The relief applies to businesses in Dolores, Montezuma, Lake, Mesa, Pueblo, Custer, Ouray, Las Animas, Baca, Routt, San Miguel and Huerfano counties impacted by the Aspen Acres, Ferris, Gold Mountain, Willow, Sharpe, Poitrey Canyon, Snyder, Green Ridge and Big Sheep fires. Additional counties may be added if new emergency declarations are issued.
The Department of Revenue extended the deadline for sales tax payments otherwise due between July 20 and Oct. 20 to Dec. 31.
Businesses also may request penalty waivers for other state taxes and fees due in October, including marijuana taxes, fuel taxes and the retailer delivery fee. Those filings must be submitted by Nov. 6.
“The Department of Revenue stands ready to help Coloradans affected by these wildfires,” Taxation Division Senior Director Brendon Reese said. “We hope that by waiving late filing penalties, impacted Coloradans can focus on rebuilding and recovering from these fires.”
The relief applies only to state taxes and does not include municipal taxes collected by home-rule cities.
The Department of Revenue will not automatically apply the extended deadlines or penalty waivers. Eligible businesses must contact the department after receiving a bill to request the relief. More information is available through the Colorado Department of Revenue.
