Becky Zimmermann, 61, started as the director of marketing for Design Workshop in 1985 and became the planning and landscape architecture firm’s CEO in 2021. She now leads the Aspen-based firm’s eight studios and leads its strategy on a wide range of placemaking projects nationwide.
“I love my field because I truly believe that we make a difference,” said Zimmermann. “We can yield influence over how spaces are accessed, who benefits from them, and how they interact with natural systems. Our decisions can directly impact public health, environmental sustainability, and community resilience.”
Zimmermann noted that women and men express power differently. “For women, power is frequently navigated through societal expectations of leadership styles—where assertiveness can be perceived as less favorable in women than in men, leading many women to adopt collaborative or empathetic approach to power,” she said. “For women, power is not just about gaining influence but often about challenging the structures that restrict it, creating a different, and often more complex, journey toward leadership and impact.”
