The Intermountain Health Lutheran Hospital, located at Clear Creek Crossing in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, is a 658,000-square-foot, six-story facility that sets a new benchmark for modern health care. Replacing a 70-year-old campus, the $428 million hospital features 226 adaptable patient rooms, spa-like healing environments and design inspired by the natural flow of nearby Clear Creek. Constructed by Barton Malow and Haselden, with architectural and interior design by HDR, the project overcame significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, including global supply chain disruptions and strict budget constraints.
Using a lite integrated project delivery (IPD) model, the team, including engineers from Cator Ruma & Associates, Martin/Martin and Introba, collaborated closely throughout design and construction. Subcontractor Encore Electric played a critical role in maintaining momentum during high-pressure phases. The result is a high-performance facility that supports the region’s future health care needs with advanced technology, nature-integrated design and pandemic-ready infrastructure.
With contributions from Davis Partnership, Design Blue Studio and the City of Wheat Ridge, the hospital strengthens community well-being through enhanced patient experiences and thoughtfully curated Colorado-based art. Intermountain Health’s commitment to team health, flexibility and innovation made the project a model of resilience and a vital resource for the people it serves.
