DENVER — Safeway announced Tuesday it will close 10 stores in Colorado, one in New Mexico and one in Nebraska as part of a restructuring tied to the company’s new Mountain West Division.
The stores will shut down on or before Nov. 7. Safeway said the decision followed a review of store performance and that affected employees will be offered positions at nearby locations where possible.
“Occasionally, after long and careful deliberation, it becomes necessary to make the difficult decision to close certain locations,” the company said in a statement. “With a focus on growth, these closures will enable us to continue investing in our store network and better align with evolving customer needs.”
Safeway recently combined its Intermountain and Denver divisions into the Mountain West Division, which the company described as a move to accelerate growth and streamline operations.
The following stores are scheduled to close:
Safeway said it has served many of these communities for decades and emphasized the closures were not made lightly.
