Asteria Theatre

The Asteria Theatre in Grand Junction, Colorado, is a transformative public project that redefines what a performing arts venue can be. Completed in just 17 months by Shaw Construction, the 49,000-square-foot facility combines architectural innovation, cutting-edge technology and sustainability. Designed by Semple Brown and engineered with precision by CMU staff and partners, the theatre’s standout features include an 860-seat auditorium, a mechanical orchestra pit and embedded LED lighting that mimics the night sky.
Construction required extraordinary coordination, particularly in erecting a 70-foot concrete masonry tower using robotic mini cranes mounted on hydromobile scaffolding. The theatre also integrates with Colorado Mesa University‘s geo-exchange system, reducing carbon emissions and operational costs. This system, the largest of its kind in the region, positions the venue as a national model of environmental stewardship.
Asteria serves as both a state-of-the-art classroom and a regional arts hub, offering economic and cultural benefits by drawing audiences and talent from across the Mountain West. Weekly collaboration among contractors, local officials and the university ensured the project was delivered safely on time and on budget. The result is a world-class venue that inspires creativity, fosters community and elevates the arts in Western Colorado.
