The Gunnison Area 16 Office Redevelopment in Colorado delivered a 7,200-square-foot, state-of-the-art service center for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, merging administrative offices, resource management functions and equipment storage into one sustainable facility. General contractor Buildings By Design partnered with Anderson Hallas Architects and architectural engineer Rachel Koleski to execute the project, with support from Concrete Systems Inc. on structural components.
Located in a remote mountain region, the site posed significant challenges in material delivery and labor coordination. Crews overcame these hurdles through meticulous sequencing and logistical planning, ensuring steady progress despite the terrain. The team also had to meet strict environmental and regulatory standards, requiring thoughtful integration of the facility into its natural surroundings.
Achieving Three Green Globes Certification, the project incorporates high-performance insulation, LED lighting and water-saving fixtures that reduce water use by 32.6 percent. Infrastructure was installed to support future solar power adoption, reinforcing the facility’s long-term energy efficiency.
Beyond its operational role, the facility strengthens Colorado’s conservation mission, enabling better wildlife services and public education. The project created jobs, supported local businesses and minimized environmental impact through stormwater strategies and native landscaping. This modern center stands as a model for sustainable public infrastructure in challenging, high-elevation settings.
