In Brief:

Haxtun School District No. Re-2J has broken ground on a renovation and addition project that will unify its prekindergarten through 12th-grade campus and modernize learning spaces for students and staff.

District officials, staff, students and community members gathered on May 13 to mark the start of construction on the project, which follows several years of planning. Funding was secured after a successful bond election and a Building Excellent Schools Today grant award in May 2025.

Superintendent said the project is intended to create a more connected campus that supports student learning and collaboration.

“By bringing our students and programs together in a more organized, connected environment, we’re creating a school that better supports learning, collaboration and day-to-day success,” Jones said.

The project will reorganize the district’s existing facilities, which officials said have become fragmented by multiple additions over time. Early childhood and kindergarten classrooms will be consolidated with improved access to playgrounds, while special education and sensory spaces will be grouped together.

The project also includes safety and operational improvements, such as a redesigned main entry and grouping athletic and physical education spaces for easier supervision.

A former elementary gymnasium will be converted into a campus-wide cafeteria, while a new auxiliary gym will support physical education and athletics programs. The district also plans to replace its 1956 vocational agriculture building with a new facility for agricultural mechanics, welding, animal science and crop science programs.

Wold Architects and Engineers, Bryan Construction and NV5 are partnering with the district on the project. Construction is expected to be completed in July 2027.
