RRCC launches original play and podcast on re-entry experiences in Colorado

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Red Rocks Community College’s Theatre Arts and Dance Department and College Gateway program are launching an original theater production and podcast highlighting the experiences of people transitioning from incarceration back into their communities.

The production, “RE-MEMBERED,” begins a tour June 11 at Pueblo Community College. Written and directed by Ammon Underhill, the play reimagines the Osirian myth and explores themes of trauma, loss and rebuilding. The story parallels the experiences of students in RRCC’s College Gateway program, which serves people impacted by the criminal-legal system.

“RE-MEMBERED” follows the journey of a character named Silas as he examines his past and decides which parts of his life he will leave behind and which he will rebuild.

RRCC Theatre & Dance and College Gateway also partnered with Colorado Radio for Justice to create the podcast series “GATEWAY.” The first episode was released on June 11, with new episodes scheduled each Friday through June.

The podcast features current and former College Gateway participants, along with educators involved in the program. It also includes music and graphic design created by RRCC students. The series is hosted and produced by Colorado Radio for Justice producers Seth Ready and Lucy Richardson.

Both projects were funded through a President’s Dream Grant awarded by RRCC President Landon Pirius.

“RE-MEMBERED” recently appeared at the Denver Fringe Festival and will continue its tour with performances at Pueblo Community College on June 11, Theatre SilCo in Silverthorne on June 20 and Red Rocks Community College on June 26 and 27.

A launch party for the “GATEWAY” podcast is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. on June 27 at The Den at Red Rocks Community College. The event is free and open to the public.

The College Gateway program supports individuals directly impacted by the criminal-legal system as they pursue education and career opportunities following incarceration.
