Jon Rizzo fell in love with Colorado at first sight in the 1990s, and its bike trails were a big part of the attraction. “I used to race BMX in the ’80s, and just have always loved bikes,” says Rizzo.

A teacher by day, Rizzo went into the bike bag business after a retailer took note of one he’d made for himself in 2023. He ordered some business cards, built a website, and started sewing bags out of largely recycled materials.

Most of Rizzo’s bags are custom, which relates to the origin of the name of his one-man operation, Pizza Box Designs. “You take your pizza box and put it up against the spot for the bag you want to make, and you just trace it and then cut out the cardboard,” says Rizzo, noting that grease can render them unrecyclable.

With snowballing sales, Rizzo sees the side hustle potentially evolving into a full-time gig. “This spring has been the busiest that I’ve been yet, and I’m excited to see where it goes,” he says.

$50 to $200 retail.
