In Brief:

— Pinkard Construction has broken ground on an $11 million aquatics expansion at the Buchanan Park Recreation Center in Evergreen.

The project for Evergreen Park and Recreation District will add a multiuse indoor pool connected to the existing natatorium. The facility will include eight lanes, a competition timing system, a climbing wall, rope swing and diving board, and will serve swim teams and the Evergreen Hurricanes program.

The expansion was designed by EVstudio in partnership with Counsilman-Hunsaker. Plans include three garage-style doors that can open to create an outdoor experience. The addition will also have a separate entrance, locker areas and mechanical systems.

Construction is expected to begin in May and take eight to 10 months. The recreation center is expected to remain open during most of the project, with a brief closure planned to connect the new and existing spaces.

“It is a privilege to return to Buchanan Park and expand upon the facility we first built more than 20 years ago,” said Tony Burke, president of Pinkard Construction.

EPRD Executive Director Cory Vander Veen said the project will replace an aging pool at another site.

“This will allow us to sunset our more than 50-year-old swimming pool at Wulf Rec Center,” Vander Veen said.
