One of the lead drafters of Colorado’s cannabis legalization initiative, Amendment 64, in 2012, Brian Vicente, 48, has helped shape national and international cannabis law as his Denver-based firm has grown to about 40 attorneys in four offices. Vicente, who served on Gov. Jared Polis’ 2018 transition team, has expanded the practice to psychedelics alongside cannabis and hemp with the subsequent state legalization of healing centers.

“There’s been a bit of a revolution in the last couple decades,” said Vicente. “Amendment 64 was the first legalization law in the history of the globe at a state level, so that really put Colorado on the map. In terms of cannabis reform, now we have 24 other states that have copied the Colorado model.”

“When I started working on cannabis policy, it was really considered career suicide, but I believed in the cause, and despite receiving a lot of criticism and hardships, we were able to break through. And now it’s been seen widely as a pretty solid policy.”
