Director and senior shareholder at Denver-based Fairfield and Woods, Jack Tanner, 63, is a problem solver at heart. “I’m still old-school,” he explained. “I do the crossword puzzle and the Sudoku puzzle in the paper, and I do chess puzzles. I just like solving puzzles.”

With a practice focused on complex commercial cases, he also scratches that itch working on numerous receiverships and represented corporations, most always with more than a few moving parts involved, and serving on the Colorado Bar Association’s Ethics Committee for the past 30 years.

Tanner joined Fairfield and Woods in 1987, and is now the longest-tenured person at the firm. One of the big lessons he’s learned in his time with the firm is about compromise. “A mediocre settlement is better than a good lawsuit,” said Tanner. “A settlement you can live with is generally better than fighting tooth and nail for the next two or more years.”
